Kristy Pankhurst of Ajax Fire & Emergency Services has been selected by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a 2019 NFPA Star for her dedication to effectively reach the public with fire-safety education.
As a 2019 NFPA Star, Pankhurst will attend NFPA’s Conference & Expo in San Antonio, where she will participate in training sessions and conference events, and network with Stars from across Canada and the United States. NFPA’s Conference & Expo is the premier annual event for fire, electrical, and building safety.
In addition, Stars will work with public education network representatives for their provinces to identify a fire- and life-safety initiative in their communities on which to focus in 2019. NFPA Stars are also invited to participate in professional development webinars during the year to enhance their knowledge, which benefits their fire departments and communities.
“Kristy has demonstrated a strong commitment to reducing the residents’ risk to fire and related hazards,” said Laura King, NFPA public-education representative for Canada. “She is truly deserving of this award, and we’re thrilled to have her attend this year’s conference.”
NFPA has chosen 11 scholarship recipients who provide consistent and innovative outreach to their communities; actively use and implement NFPA resources and programs to promote NFPA in their communities; and/or are new, enthusiastic, fire- and life-safety educators interested in learning about NFPA programs and materials.
Founded in 1896, NFPA is a global, nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. The association delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy; and by partnering with others who share an interest in furthering the NFPA mission.
Recipients were identified through NFPA’s Canadian public education representative, and selected by the Public Education and Wildfire Division. The Stars program includes travel, conference registration, and lodging for the 2019 Conference & Expo.
