Celebrate Youth Week in Whitby with free activities May 1 to 7

Youth are invited to celebrate Youth Week in Whitby this May 1 to 7 with free activities and events aimed at recognizing the positive contributions young people make to the community.

“Youth Week provides the important opportunity to celebrate our youth and showcase the many programs and services our Town has to offer them,” said Mayor Don Mitchell. “I encourage all youth to take part in the activities and learn more about how they can continue to get involved and help make our Town even better.”

As a Platinum Level Youth Friendly Community, the Town will celebrate the week with the following free activities:

  • Youth Fair – May 1

This annual event will feature more than 40 community organizations that will provide information geared toward youth, including volunteer opportunities, job prospects for summer employment and more. Students in Grades 8 to 11 will be bussed to the by-invitation-only event being held at the McKinney Centre.

  • Youth Room Open House (free pizza to be served at all locations) – May 2

Free pizza, provided by Toppers Pizza, will be served starting at approximately 3 p.m. at the Town’s three youth rooms located at the Brooklin Community Centre and Library, McKinney Centre and Henry Street High School. All youth are invited to come get a slice, play games, hang out and see what the Town’s youth rooms have to offer.

  • Art Attack event – May 3

This annual event, presented in partnership with Station Gallery, will celebrate and feature artwork done by Whitby youth in a variety of mediums, including drawing and painting, sculpture, video and film, and photography. Drop in to the Station Gallery at 7 p.m. on May 3 for the Art Attack event or any time through to May 6 to view the artwork.

On May 1, as part of this year’s Youth Week celebrations, the Town will also launch a survey aimed at collecting youth feedback on the development of the new 2019-2024 Recreation and Leisure Services Youth Strategy. More details on how to take part will be shared later this month.
