City launches Recreational Cannabis Use in Oshawa webpage

In October 2018, the federal government legalized the recreational usage of cannabis throughout Canada. In an effort to keep community members informed about the laws and bylaws surrounding its use, the City of Oshawa has developed the Recreational Cannabis Use in Oshawa webpage. Residents can find information such as where cannabis can and cannot be consumed as well as how to report smoking or vaping of cannabis where it is not permitted.

The webpage also includes links for additional cannabis-related information from Durham Region Health, Durham Region Police Services, as well as the provincial and federal governments.

The province has provided municipalities a one-time opportunity to opt-out of having private recreational cannabis retail stores within their municipal boundaries. City councils must notify the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario by Jan. 22. A decision to opt-in cannot be reversed while a decision to opt-out may be reversed in the future. Updates on council’s decision will be available on the Recreational Cannabis Use in Oshawa webpage.
