The City of Pickering recently won the “Lighting – Largest Savings” award at the Powering Up Durham Awards.
The Powering Up Durham Awards recognizes organizations that are championing energy conservation initiatives within their community.
Veridian, Hydro One, Whitby Hydro, and Oshawa PUC were each responsible for nominating a worthy candidate, and Veridian took the opportunity to highlight Pickering’s incredible savings over the last year. The City’s winning sustainable initiatives included:
LED streetlight conversion program (converted over 7,000 streetlights)
Facility lighting retrofits (Pickering Recreation Complex, East Shore Community Centre, City Hall)
The City’s new LED lights consume less energy, have a longer lifetime, offer increased visibility, and lower overall costs.
“We are thrilled to be recognized Region-wide for our energy-conservation efforts,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “As a leader in Sustainability, the City of Pickering is proud to do its part in helping the environment, while also realizing significant cost savings with respect to energy usage and equipment maintenance.”
Pickering’s dynamic City Centre has been designated by the Province of Ontario as both an Urban Growth Centre and Mobility Hub, and continues to evolve as a preferred destination for creative learning, memorable events, and unique experiences at the heart of a vibrant, connected, and engaged community.
