Ms. Pat Campbell, departing President and CEO of Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital (OSMH) made a passionate plea for support from the Township of Brock council at a recent meeting. Ms. Campbell provided the presentation on behalf of her successor, Mr. Carmine Stumpo.
OSMH is one of 23 medium size hospital organizations in Ontario (out of approximately 150 hospitals), serving more than 2 million patients across the province. Many of the patients served by OSMH are from Brock Township. For the past several years medium size hospitals have been advocating for
change because of the way the existing funding formula works against medium size hospitals.
OSMH has struggled to balance its budget for the past 6 years, and made some difficult choices during that time. They now have a balanced budget plan for the 2018/19 fiscal year, contingent upon some assumptions that are awaiting confirmation. Ms. Campbell advised that OSMH has $22 Million in unmet Capital needs.
Recognizing that OSMH is a major contributor to the residents of Brock Township, Ms Campbell
asked for council’s active support in pushing for funding and policy reform as they continue to struggle to meet the needs of patients – most evident in waiting time for care, particularly waiting for a bed if admitted or waiting for surgery, including orthopedics or diagnostic services.
Councillors asked several clarification questions before forwarding information to staff.
