Fire leads to discovery of illegal Clarington grow op

A fire at a residence in Clarington led to the discovery of an illegal marijuana grow op and the seizure of more than $106,000 in cash and drugs.

On Saturday, May 5, 2018, at approximately 1:00 a.m., emergency services were called to a house fire on Claret Road in Clarington. While working on the fire, members of Clarington Emergency and Fire Services discovered a marijuana grow op in the basement of the residence.

Officers responded and discovered 51 marijuana plants in various stages of growth, as well as multiple garbage bags full of dried marijuana, a digital scale and a vacuum sealer. It was later determined the owner did not have the necessary license from Health Canada to grow.

Officers seized $97,000 worth of marijuana and $9,370 in cash.

Jeremy GRILLS, age 41, of Claret Road in Clarington is charged with: Production of a Schedule II Substance and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. He was released on a Promise to Appear and an OIC Undertaking.
