First Whitby volunteer strategy builds cherished community events

Did you know that more than 150 local volunteers dedicate more than 600 hours of their time each year to support eight large scale community events in Whitby?

Whitby’s special events volunteers are one of a kind. They are essential to improving the quality of life in Whitby. Without them cherished community events such as Canada Day, Harvest Festival, Open Streets, Christmas in the Village and more simply wouldn’t be possible.

To help provide Whitby’s special events volunteers with a more meaningful and rewarding experience, on September 17, 2018, Whitby Town Council approved the Town’s first Volunteer Strategy. When launched in 2019, Whitby will become the first municipality in Durham Region with a strategy to guide its relationship and two-way interaction with its event volunteers.

Specifically, the strategy – which was created based on feedback collected from current volunteers and those interested in volunteering with the Town – will guide how the Town attracts, retains, trains and recognizes its event volunteers. In addition, an Action Plan and Tools will be created this fall to direct how the strategy will be put into action.

Ultimately, the Volunteer Strategy and Action Plan is expected to positively impact civic pride, instill a pride of place and lead to more engaged volunteers.
