Gala cruise event launches historic St. Georges Church fundraising campaign

St. George’s Anglican Church in Pickering Village, Ajax has launched a fundraising campaign to repair their roof, which could cost upwards of $100,000. The launch event for the campaign was a Raise the Roof Gala with a cruise night theme at the church hall on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Making repairs more difficult, and more expensive, is the fact that the church is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, which requires any work match the original design and characteristics from 180 years ago. The church plans to borrow half of the required funds and qualifies for a grant under the Pickering Village Community Improvement Program, but will need to raise approximately $20,000 on their own to complete the work.

St. George’s has been a part of the communities of Ajax-Pickering for over 180 years. The parish was founded in 1832, and the church building was finished in 1859. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved churches in Durham Region.

Today, the church has an active and faithful congregation and a new centre for worship that can comfortably hold approximately 400 people. It is located at 77 Randall Dr., at the corner of Highway 2 in Ajax
