Following 25 years as Durham Region’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Garry Cubitt announced his retirement, effective late 2018.
Cubitt’s public sector career began 47 years ago as a Social Worker with the City of Oshawa. He accepted a Family Councillor position with The Regional Municipality of Durham in 1974, was named Commissioner of Social Services in 1987; and was appointed to the Region’s top position, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), in 1993.
Regional Council recently recognized Cubitt for his 25 years of service as CAO, attributing much of his success to providing thoughtful, balanced advice, guidance and leadership. To date, Cubitt holds the record as the longest serving CAO for Durham Region.
“Under Garry’s strong leadership Regional programs have grown from servicing a population of 444,425 to approximately 682,000 today. His undying efforts to build partnerships and work towards common, relevant visions and goals have resulted in continuous improvements across the entire region,” said Gerri Lynn O’Connor, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer.
In his retirement notification to Regional employees, Cubitt expressed the gratitude he feels when reflecting on the people, projects and moments of his years in public service.
“I’ve strived to be considerate and comprehensive in my decision-making and to lead with both my head and heart. It is in this same spirit that I retire,” said Cubitt.
