The battle for third place in the Eastern Conference standings was anything but a battle.

Allan McShane, Serron Noel and Brett Neumann each scored twice to help the Oshawa Generals lay an 8-2 thrashing on the Sudbury Wolves, in OHL action, Mar. 17, at the Tribute Communities Centre.

The Wolves, whose hopes of a Central Division title were squashed earlier in the day when the Niagara IceDogs beat the North Bay Battalion, 8-3, came into the final game of the 2018-19 regular season schedule one point ahead of  the Generals in the Eastern Conference standings.

A quick start, though, determined this one pretty early.

Oshawa blitzed top Finnish goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, scoring three times on eight shots to drive him from the Sudbury net just 14:08 into the contest. Backup Jonathan Lemaire didn’t fair much better, giving up five goals on 31 shots the rest of the way.

McShane would add three assists to finish with a five-point night, while Brandon Saigeon contributed a four-point effort with four assists. Anthony Salinitri, with his 48, and Nando Eggenberger also scored for the Generals (44-20-4-0), who will now face the rival Peterborough Petes in the opening round of the OHL playoffs starting this week.

Jack Thompson and Darion Pilon scored for the Wolves (43-20-3-2), who will face the Mississauga Steelheads in the first round.
