“In These Threads” highlights missing female narrative in Canadian art and storytelling

From January 20th until March 17th, 2019, the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington will be hosting an exhibition of the work of Bowmanville artist Jane Eccles. The exhibit, entitled “In These Threads”, consists of paintings of dresses which connect to significant events in their owner’s lives. The dresses Eccles acquired inspired paintings about the narratives of Canadian women from different backgrounds and walks of life. The Visual Arts Centre of Clarington describes Eccles’ lack of depiction of the female body within the dresses as a “feminist critique” which highlights the absence of the female body in the paintings, narratives, and histories of Canada.

In addition to the regular exhibit, on Saturday, March 9th, visitors can attend a storytelling by Jane Eccles at 11:00 am at the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington, and a musical performance by local folk musician Anne Walker at 2:00 pm at the Clarington Museum and Archives. Both of these special events are presented in conjunction with “In These Threads” in celebration of International Women’s Day.
