Celebrate Seniors Month at the Pickering Recreation Complex.
In honour of Seniors’ Month this June, the City of Pickering’s Fitness Services section will be offering free workshops for adults 55+ throughout the month at the various community centres showcasing some new and exciting older adult group fitness programs.
Nordic Pole Walking (June 3 from 11am-12pm at PRC): A low-impact, easy to learn, and enjoyable exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels that helps engage 90 per cent more muscles than regular walking. Alongside a certified pole walking instructor, proper pole walking technique will be emphasized. Poles will be provided if you do not have your own, and also available for purchase. Nordic and urban poles are both acceptable for use. The class is led outside so please be sure to dress according to the weather.
Zumba Gold (June 4 from 1-2pm at GALCC): This class is catered for those looking to spice up their fitness routine with a little Latin flavor! Zumba Gold® fuses Latin rhythms and simple dance moves to create a one of a kind fitness program that is fun and works! The class incorporates intervals of fast and slow rhythms and muscle conditioning designed to tone your body while burning calories.
Arthritis Dance Fit (June 5 from 12:45-1:45pm at PRC): This dance fitness program is choreographed to maximize fun while increasing range of motion, agility, balance and strength. Regular participation in this class decreases pain, swelling and stiffness related to osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid-arthritis and is also suited for those with fibromyalgia. This partially seated program leverages various equipment to improve overall quality of life.
Yoga (June 6 from 1-2pm at PRC): Progressive Hatha style Yoga designed for those seeking to increase and maintain joint mobility while increasing strength and improving balance. This program will help to improve your breathing and concentration. Healthy older adults with no major joint or medical conditions will enjoy this program.
Chair Yoga (June 10 from 10:30-11:30am at ESCC): This is a unique yoga style that adapts yoga positions and poses through creative use of a chair. Poses are done seated on the chair or the chair is used for support during standing and balance poses. The chair allows for greater stability to help you feel supported and safe so that all fitness levels and physical abilities can enjoy the benefits of a more traditional practice.
Barre and Balance (June 11 from 1:30-2:30pm at PRC): Using a chair for support, this class incorporates the disciplines of yoga, pilates and ballet to perform a variety of strength and balance exercises to increase range of motion, mobility and confidence. Modifications will be offered.
Keep Fit (June 13 from 1-2pm at ESCC): This class has all the components you need to Keep Fit. It begins with low impact, easy to follow cardio followed by muscle conditioning, and finishes with stretching. Get the kinks out and loosen up those muscles.
Back to Basics (June 17 from 12:30-1:30pm at PRC): Designed for older adults that are new to exercise and/or require the use of walking aids such as canes and walkers. This class incorporates seated strength training and stretching exercises along with walking.
Nia (June 18 from 11:30am-12:30pm at ESCC): Nia is a dance based cardio class that will get your heart pumping but is easy on the joints. It draws from disciplines of the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. The music is upbeat, the moves are easy to learn, and you’ll have so much fun you’ll forget you’re exercising! All fitness levels are welcome, the moves can be adapted and the intensity level varied.
