Three more segments of dedicated bus-only and bicycle lanes are now complete along Kingston Road (Durham Highway 2) through Ajax and Pickering. The three new Kingston Road segments include areas around Whites Road, Brock Road and Westney Road.
“Reserved lanes improve safety for drivers, transit passengers and cyclists, and they also help keep traffic moving,” says Ramesh Jagannathan, Director of Transportation and Field Services. “The opening of these dedicated bus-only lanes will give transit priority for Durham Region Transit’s PULSE 900 route through three of the most congested intersection locations along Highway 2.”
“We are excited about the opening of additional bus only lanes as part of Bus Rapid Transit in Durham, leading to increased reliability and offering better service for our customers along this busy transit corridor,” says Vincent Patterson, General Manager of Durham Region Transit (DRT)
The Durham Highway 2 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project includes a provincial funding commitment of more than $82 million. The Durham BRT is helping make commuting faster and more convenient for families.
Bus-only lanes are reserved exclusively for Durham Region Transit and GO Transit buses, as clearly marked with overhead diamond signs, line markings and text markings. The use of the bus-only lanes by motorists is prohibited and subject to charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
