Oshawa Generals focus on improving the roster, not early play-off exit

The Oshawa Generals Hockey Club welcomed 15 new players last Saturday, April 7th, as part of the OHL Priority Selection Draft. Most intriguing of all the new recruits, Tyler Tullio, selected 11th overall in, will enjoy a homecoming of sorts.

Tullio, who played for the Vaughan Kings AAA hockey club, is the son of  Rocco Tullio, the owner of the Oshawa Generals. The family ties should not fool anyone, as Tullio is highly touted by OHL Central Scouting. “Tyler is a competitive player that would do almost anything to score a goal or win a hockey game.” said an OHL scout when asked about the young centreman. “He is a good skater that can beat defenders wide and win loose puck battles all over the ice.”

Improving on this season’s results will be paramount in 2019, following an unimpressive showing in the playoffs in 2018, losing 4-1 to the Niagara Ice Dogs in the first round of the playoffs. Tullio was brought to Oshawa with this in mind, as the scouting report on him describes him as a “gamer, the type of player you win with.”

Winning was no doubt the game plan for the Generals front office in this draft, selecting another top tier centreman with their second pick indicative of that. Dylan Robinson, picked 28th overall, brings both size and skill while adding even more depth down the middle for the Gens.

Playing for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Robinson is described by scouts as a “a tall, lengthy skater that has deceiving speed in open ice. He has elite puck skills and is a threat whenever he has the puck on his stick.” And perhaps most important of all, the 6-foot centre has “a high hockey sense and always seems to be in the right spot,” explains OHL Central scouting, a cherished skill in any young hockey player.

Gens fans will not have to wait long to see these prospects in action for the first when they take the ice at the Tribute Communities Centre for Orientation Camp. Inter-squad scrimmages will be taking place on April 21st from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm and on April 22nd from 9:30 am – 11:30 am.
