PickWaste was selected by their fellow neighbourhood groups for ‘Best Group Effort’ at the City of Pickering’s Celebrating Sustainable Neighhourhoods event. The distinction awards the group the opportunity to work with the City on a community enhancement project valued up to $10,000.
“I am proud of our Celebrating Sustainable Neighbourhoods program and all participants,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “The program encourages members of the community to come together and engage in various community-building initiatives, promoting civic pride and sustainability.”
“None of our efforts would have been possible without the support of the City – their help with gloves, bags, disposal of waste, and other coordination helped us to do what we were able to do.” said PickWaste members Sam Demma and Dillon Mendes
The winning group was selected by its fellow participating neighbourhood groups through a peer vote, following a presentation period where representatives from each group had the opportunity to share their sustainable achievements through the program.
Previous winners have been responsible for creating beautiful, educational, environmentally important, and accessible spaces within the City.
The award-winning program challenges neighbourhood groups to complete activities that make Pickering a better place environmentally, socially, or economically. In year six of the program, seven neighbourhood groups completed hundreds of community-building initiatives.
