Twenty-two young Whitby residents received a 2018 Celebrating Youth Award in recognition of their outstanding leadership and positive contributions to the community of Whitby.
Since 2002, the Celebrating Youth Awards have recognized Whitby youth aged 12 to 18 who through their selfless actions, volunteerism, or involvement in school or community organizations, have demonstrated a commitment to making Whitby a better place to live, work and play.
The winners are dedicated to school councils and events; positive athletic role models; mentors to children of all abilities in sport, art and reading activities; and community ambassadors. Collectively they have represented Girl Up, the Malala Fund, Operation EcoPen, Share Life, Terry Fox Run, Nothing but Nets – Defeat Malaria, Kids Help Phone, Denise House – Emergency Shelter for Women and Children, The Salvation Army and more.
“Each year, I am inspired by the commitment of Whitby youth to give back to their community,” said Mayor Don Mitchell who, along with members of the Whitby Youth Council, presented this year’s awards at the Centennial Building in Whitby. “I’m proud that our Town is home to bright and talented youth with a spirit of volunteerism. Congratulations to each award winner, and thank you for your dedication.”
