On July 26th, the federal government announced that Whitby steel manufacturer Gerdau has been selected to receive a significant investment from the Strategic Innovation Fund
The SIF is a federal funding program that supports businesses across the country with the goal of creating jobs and prosperity for Canadians while accelerating technology transfer and commercialization of innovative products, processes and services.
In response to the Government of Canada’s announcement today, Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell has issued the following statement:
“I want to thank Member of Parliament Jennifer O’Connell and the Government of Canada for this significant investment in Gerdau.I look forward to seeing the advancements Gerdau can achieve in their manufacturing processes and innovative technologies as a result of this investment.”
Gerdau has been a leader in specialized manufacturing and industrial recycling for many years and this $20-million investment will help to ensure the company’s continued success within our vibrant community. I am particularly pleased that this funding will support the further diversification of our economy and create more than 70 local jobs, both of which align with our Council’s Goals.
I look forward to seeing the advancements Gerdau can achieve in their manufacturing processes and innovative technologies as a result of this investment.”
