At a special council meeting this month, Mayor Don Mitchell and Members of Council recognized Whitby resident Ana Padurariu for her silver medal win in Beam at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships held in Doha, Qatar. Ana is part of the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics team with Gymnastics Canada.
In business activity, Council approved the 2019 Budget focused on managing the Town’s recent investments in strategic initiatives, infrastructure and staffing, while continuing to plan for the future. The Town is responsible for collecting property taxes on behalf of the Region of Durham and the School Boards. Of the overall tax bill, the Town’s portion is approximately 33 per cent.
Council approved an expression of interest to be issued for the redevelopment of the property located at 128 Brock Street South (the former Whitby Chamber of Commerce office). The property is located in Downtown Whitby, on the west side of Brock Street South at Colborne Street West. Construction on the site could begin in late 2019 or early 2020.
Coucil also invited residents to take part in two community waste events this spring. The annual compost giveaway is on Saturday, May 11, and the co-collection drop-off event for household hazardous waste, electronic waste and reuse items is on Saturday, June 15. Both events will take place between 8 a.m. and noon at the Whitby Operations Centre located at 333 McKinney Drive.
