York Region provides rebate for Emerald Ash Borer damage

If you have lost a beloved Ash tree and are interested in adding more green to your landscape, York Region has a winning program for you. Residents can easily have lost trees replaced with help from the Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests Organization (LEAF). For a limited time, residents also receive a $100 rebate from the Region for every tree planted. LEAF will help you choose the right tree for your yard and do all the work at an affordable price.

Th Emerald Ash Borer is a forest pest native to Asia that has killed millions of Ash trees in southwestern Ontario, and the Great Lakes States. It attacks both healthy and stressed Ash trees when its larvae tunnel through the tree’s vascular system which delivers water, nutrients and sugars throughout the tree. Emerald Ash Borer will only travel a few kilometers per year on its own; however it can be easily dispersed long distances by people moving infested materials, such as firewood, logs, lumber, and woodchips.

There are many other planting programs available in York Region through their partnerships with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and LEAF.
